Spanish National Health Service In Good Shape

December 26, 2006

Waiting times are down for patients in the Spanish Health Service. Earlier this week there was a meeting in Madrid of the Inter-regional Council for the National Health Service in Spain. This is the body which has representation from all the regions and the Ministry of Health. They saw that, for the first time since June 2004, there has been a reduction in the number of people waiting for an operation, the average waiting time is also down, as is the percentage who have had to wait more than 6 months. The good news was given after the meeting by the Spanish Minister for Health, Elena Salgado, who said that across the country 379,704 people are currently waiting for surgery, and that the average waiting time is now 72 days. She indicated that the improvements were particularly impressive if you take into account the 3% recent increase in Spanish population numbers.
