Alicante Province Tops EU Voter Numbers
July 27, 2009
Alicante has been named as the Spanish province where the highest number of citizens with the right to vote in EU elections reside.
Around 275,000 EU residents in Spain were eligible to vote at the June 7 elections, more than double the amount of the last election held in 2004.
The electoral census shows that as of February 1, 275,732 EU citizens had registered their wish to vote in Spain.
Experts say that the rise in the number of people eligible to vote is down to the fact that the EU has expanded and this year Romanian and Bulgarian citizens can take part.
The country with the largest number of eligible voters is the UK with 75,623 registered on the census.
