Alicante leads the list of pensioner foreigners in Spain

The latest immigration data show that there are 4.4 million foreigners resident in Spain. Alicante is the Spanish province with most foreign residents aged over 64 at 45,012, according to the data from the Immigration Permanent Observatory. The number is far larger than the second placed province, Málaga with 22,414. The numbers are swelled by EU nationals who have retired to Spain, where as in the cities of Barcelona and Madrid we find most foreigners aged under 16, 98,565 and 97,499 respectively. The cities win also for the number of foreigners of working age, Madrid with 684,826 and Barcelona with 549,301. The number of foreign residents with a valid residency here on December 31 2008 was 4,473,499, up 12.4% or 494,485 people over the year. 40.18% of the total are EU nationals, 29.87% from Latin America, 20.66% from Africa, 6.95% from Asia, 2.75% from non EU European countries, 0.45% from North America and 0.04% from Oceania.
