Murcia in Spain has more tourists from the UK than the rest of the world put together

November 14, 2006

More than 70 per cent of the tourists who visited the Murcia region last year came from the UK, it was revealed this week. The figures were set out by regional tourism officer José Pablo Ruiz Abellán during a visit to the World Travel Market fair in London. The news comes after Murcia politicians feared earlier this year that the image of the region had been tarnished by a series of building scandals which had been widely reported in the UK press. He stated that diversification would be key next year with cultural tourism, eco-tourism and visits linked to the region’s spas being pushed. The number of UK tourists wishing to holiday in Murcia is likely to have a positive effect on house prices . Many homes in the region are bought with the intention of letting to holiday makers, to help cover the costs of maintaining the property.
