Moves to protect the enviroment on the Mar Menor, Spain
November 12, 2006
A total of 20 million square metres of land on the shores of the Mar Menor could be protected from development under a scheme mooted by Cartagena city hall this week. The move has come after pressure mounted on the city hall over alleged irregularities involving building schemes proposed for the southern end of the largest salt water lagoon inSpain. A proposed development of 5,000 new homes was halted in its tracks by the regional government last week. In recent months environmentalists have slammed the regional authority and town halls for allowing shores of the Mar Menor to be turned into a concrete jungle. Ecologists have warned that the increase in housing complexes and golf courses around the saltwater lagoon is irrevocably harming its delicate ecosystem.
