A million Britons have left the UK since 2000

November 6, 2006

The British Office for National Statistics said for the second year running around 200,000 Britons left the UK. The number of British citizens who emigrate each year has gone up by more than a third since the mid-1990s. The total going abroad to live was 380,000 last year, which included 198,000 UK citizens. A count of British passport holders abroad issued by the Foreign Office earlier this year indicated that the most popular destinations in Europe were Spain and France. The main reasons cited for leaving the UK included the high cost of living, high council taxes, housing costs, mortgage costs and the poor climate. Inward immigration into the UK was also cited as a contributory factor.
