Smoking crackdown in Murcia Spain

August 14, 2008

The Murcia regional government has passed a law to regulate smoking areas in bars and restaurants which includes additional rules to national regulations passed in December, 2005.

According to the new law, bars and restaurants larger than 100 square metres must have smoking and non-smoking areas separated by a wall and door.

Additional ventilation systems must be installed to keep non-smoking areas free from smoke.

According to the regional department for health the premises should have already finished building work to separate both areas.

Councillor María Ángeles Palacios said no extra time would be offered.

“The inspectors could visit and fine the premises at any time,” she said.

Owners of bars and restaurants smaller than a hundred metres must decide whether their premises are for smokers or for non-smokers.
