End to 99p flights to Spain?

July 20, 2008

MEPs passed a landmark law which will see airlines banned from advertising fares that do not include the taxes and charges which passengers are forced to pay.

This will mean that adverts in newspapers, magazines and on websites will have to include all unavoidable costs.

The new law will come into effect at the end of 2008 or the beginning of 2009, according to an EU parliament spokesman.

MEP Michael Cashman said yesterday (Thursday) that airfares as displayed will have to include all taxes, fees and charges added to the basic ticket price and known at the time of publication.

Mr Cashman, who has championed the rights of EU residents in the Valencia Region hit by development abuses, added: “The full fare including all charges is the fare that should be advertised.

“Anything else could be accused of mis-selling which is illegal under current EU law. Budget airlines and budget fares should be properly advertised and not use bucket-shops techniques for selling.”

The Association of European Airlines has welcomed the changes which they say will make prices clearer for passengers.
