The Spanish close down Regent Street in London
September 06, 2006
One of the best ever Spanish promotions took place last Sunday in London’s Regent Street when 14 of Spain’s autonomous regions took part in an event called Paseo por España, which attracted as many as half a million visitors.
Sand was put down, and not just for children to play on the beach, but also so the dancing horses from the Balearics could perform. The Castellers were in force building their human towers, upto seven stories tall, and plenty of regional dances of which flamenco was only one.
The Spanish should never be underestimated when it comes to organising a party. Such a party in Spain would possibly degenerate into disorganised good humour, but the British added their personality as well behaved and orderly queues were formed for the free paella, chorizo or even chocolate con churros.
Regent Street Association Chief, Annie Walker, described it as their best ever festival to close the street. ‘Amazing’ she said.
The man behind the idea, the Director of the Spanish Tourist Office in London, Ignacio Vasallo, described the day as a hit.
