Costa Blanca tourism set to grow by 4% in 2006

August 29, 2006

The spectacular increase in the number of British holidaymakers, added to cancellations at other trouble-struck resorts along the Med, has placed the Costa Blanca as the Spanish region where foreign tourism has increased the most. There were 20.4 per cent more British holidaymakers than July last year, representing the largest share of the 731,350 foreign holidaymakers who visited the Valencia Region last month – 9.5 per cent of the national tally. So far this year 33.3 million foreign tourists have visited Spain, 9,319,076 of whom were British, just under 5.8 million German and almost 5.2 million French. Another key factor in the Costa tourism figure rise has been last-minute reservations due to the cancellation of UK and Northern European bookings to destinations in trouble-struck areas along the Mediterranean, namely the Middle East and North Africa. Hoteliers associations and government sources expect the trend to continue until September. The forecast is for an annual four per cent increase in the number of visitors to Spain this year.
