Enough water to last two years in Alicante Spain
November 29, 2007
Alicante's three main reservoirs have been able to store 11 cubic hectometres in one month thanks to the torrential downpours that hit the north of the province in October.
The unexpected deluge has left them with the capacity to supply the Marinas Alta and Baja and Alcoy for the next two years.
The Guadalest, Beniarrés and Amadorio reservoirs filled up so quickly that an alert state was issued in case they overfilled, it has now been rescinded but only after technicians took action to drain off excess supplies.
Technicians at Guadalest say that the reservoir is currently at 81 per cent of its capacity although last week they had to allow some of the water to drain off as a precautionary measure in case of more rain.
Between them the three reservoirs are holding 37 cubic hectometres of water.
The president of the Júcar water confederation, Juan José Moragues, confirmed that the water supply situation for north Alicante Province is very healthy at the moment with the prospects for 2008 in good shape but the same could not be said for the south where reservoirs are only at 12 per cent of their capacity.
Despite the good news about the supply situation, central and regional government officials have warned that people should continue to use water sparingly.
