Plans to potect salt lakes in Calpe, Costa Blanca, Spain
September 07, 2007
Spain’s environment ministry and Calpe council will enter talks with the owners of land around the Salinas salt lake to extend the protection zone.
A government spokesman said it aims to increase the protection zone around the lake to 100 metres, but to do this all parties will have to agree on the solution.
He added there are two options that could be employed. In the first, the land around the lake could be swapped for land somewhere else in the town.
In the second the government could buy the land and pay compensation to its owners.
If the latter route is chosen, the government has earmarked two million euros to be used for the purchase and compensation process.
If the development plan for the area around the Salinas lake were allowed to go ahead, 20-storey tower blocks housing 2,200 apartments would be built.
Environmentalists say that over-development of the area near the lake has had a detrimental affect on the flora and fauna.
