New law targets beach hogs in Valencia
August 14, 2007
The Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FVMP) has drawn up a new set of bylaws that will regulate the use of beaches in the region. Under the new rules, which councils are not obliged to adopt, FVMP wants people who reserve areas of beach close to the water with umbrellas and then return later to be fined up to 750 euros. In response to the new rules Benidorm council has said that it would study the proposals but at first sight considers them to be too excessive, especially fining people who go to the beach early to claim a space by planting an umbrella then return hours later to use it.
