Spain has strongest growth since 1975

April 20, 2007

José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero claimed on Monday Spain has experienced the best level of growth since democracy was restored.

The prime minister, in an address to the Spanish stock exchange, said the economy is expected to grow more than 3.5 percent this year.

But he said 2006 was the best year yet for expansion since the end of the death of the dictator General Francisco Franco in 1975. Democracy was finally restored in 1978.

Zapatero also claimed Spain will continue improving its productivity, see a reduction in consumer prices and cut its foreign deficit.

He said the first quarter growth in 2007 stood at 4 percent.

Last year, the country’s level of growth made it the world’s eighth strongest economy, claimed the prime minister.
