New nationwide unit to tackle building scandals in Spain
April 10, 2007
In an attempt to tackee the proliferation of building corruption in Spain, the Guardia Civil has announced the formation of a new unit that will investigate alleged scandals on a national basis.
The 194-strong unit will be controlled from Madrid by the Unidad Central Operativa (UCO) which in turn will respond to requests from the public prosecutors office.
All of the officers that make up the unit have been trained in urban development procedures and money laundering systems.
Investigations by the unit will be carried out either at the request of the public prosecutor’s office, as a result of a formal complaint or on its own initiative.
It will be backed up by the housing ministry, urban and environment prosecutors, anti-corruption prosecutors and the tax man.
